Larry's story
Larry Brandy Aboriginal storyteller
I am a Wiradjuri man from Condobolin, central New South Wales. The Wiradjuri Nation is the second largest Aboriginal Nation in Australia, and covers most of central New South Wales.
I learnt more about my Wiradjuri culture while working for the Regional Aboriginal Land Council in Wagga Wagga, NSW. I worked with archaeologists and Wiradjuri Elders on cultural surveys.
I now live on Ngunnawal Country in Canberra. I am passionate about sharing my culture with people of all ages and in particular children.
I have been storytelling and performing in schools and preschools for over 25 years. I love performing with young children as they are so eager to learn about Aboriginal culture.
In my performances children become kangaroos, emus and hunters as they learn how we hunted and found food in traditional times.
I use real artefacts as well as animal masks to involve the children. We always start a performance with an acknowledgement to the Traditional Owners of the Country we are on.
I have published 3 books for children, introducing them to the Wiradjuri language. There is a colouring-in A to Z book – W is for Wiradjuri; an activity book – Yalbilinya (to learn); and a counting book – I can count to 10 in Wiradjuri.
I have performed around the world, in Bali, Djkarta, New Caledonia, the United States and Canada. I have been awarded a Churchill Fellowship, as well as NAIDOC person of the year in the ACT.
